My name is Amin Kanji. Better known as 'Mulani'. I was born in Kibwezi, Kenya and raised in Nairobi, Kenya.
The name Mulani has a long history behind it as it is the name of my great grandfather. My parents used to own a convenience store in Nairobi and it was called Mulani Stores. My wife Ashy and I decided to carry on the tradition by calling our shop Mulani Paan House.
We started our little venture with a small Paan booth in a Pakistani restaurant in Edmonton, 9 years ago. We were the first Paan shop in Edmonton. After Two years there, we opened our own take out restaurant with various types of Paan and over Seventeen types of Faluda's.
Although the history of Paan and Faluda's is from India and Pakistan, it is also very popular in East Africa. Infact, my grandmother was an avid Paan chewer. She passed the habit on to my mom and ofcourse this is where I picked up the habit.
Research shows that Paan has many benefits. For example: From using it in prayers and religious ceremonies to eating it in the form of a 'paan', betel leaves contain many curative and healing health benefits. The leaves are full of vitamins like vitamin C, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin and carotene and are a great source of calcium.
To enhance our business, we decided to incorporate Ashy's Kitchen. Consisting of an East African Food menu to go with our unique Paans and Faluda's!! Our Favourite thing to do in Nairobi was to go eat Ribs, Mogo, Chooza Chicken, Kebabs, etc and then have Paan and Faluda for dessert! Well, we can't go back home too often, but we brought "HOME" to your doorstep!
